Harper Field are very sad to announce the loss of our fabulous medals and militaria specialist Patrick Smart, who has died after a short illness. We all miss him hugely, particularly his wonderful sense of humour and infectious laugh. We keep expecting to hear his trademark whistling about the saleroom and his loss is felt by everyone here as well as by our regular customers.

Patrick Smart was head of the medals and militaria department at Stroud Auctions and had an incredibly wide and varied knowledge of all things military.

His interest in military history started in his school days after watching the film Zulu, and only increased during the 14 years he served in the Royal Gloucestershire Hussars (RGH). He remained involved with them throughout his life as a member of their historical committee, as well as being treasurer to the Friends of the Soldiers of Gloucestershire Museum and Hon Secretary to the RGH Benevolent Fund.

During his time at Harper Field he oversaw the sale of some significant items and collections, including the Thomas Mason collection of bayonets (realised over £100,000) and a large consignment from the RGH Museum which made over £55,000 for the charity.

Patrick was a well loved and highly valued member of the team.
